Mostly we encourage desexing cats and dogs before they are six months old.
Performed by operation under general anaesthetic, your pet is admitted in the morning and can be collected later that same day.
Will desexing affect my pet’s personality?
Not at all. Your pet will retain its pre-operation personality, possibly with the bonus of being calmer and less aggressive.
Should my female have one litter first?
No – it’s actually better for her not to have any litters before being speyed. Her risk of developing breast cancer increases if she’s allowed to go through her first heat.
Will desexing cause my pet to become fat?
Your pet’s metabolism may be slowed due to hormonal changes after desexing. However, this is easily managed by adjusting its diet and ensuring adequate exercise. There’s no reason a desexed pet cannot be maintained at a normal weight. We can recommend specific diets designed to maintain your pet’s weight after being desexed.
Is desexing painful?
As with all surgery, there is some tenderness immediately after the procedure, but most pets recover quickly. We administer pain relief prior to and after surgery. Your pet will be discharged with a short course of pain relief medication for the first few days after the surgery. In many cases, pets will likely need some encouragement to take it easy!
