Heat stroke is a potentially fatal condition where the core body temperature rises to a dangerous level. If not treated quickly pets may have seizures and die.
Cats too can be affected by heat stroke but they’re better able to escape the heat and can move into a shady tree to cool down.
Signs of heat stroke in your pet can include:
heavy panting
difficulty breathing
incoordination
red gums
vomiting and diarrhoea
thick, tacky saliva
NEVER leave your pet in a hot car; even a few minutes can cause death.
If you leave your pet outside during the day, make sure they have plenty of cool water and adequate shade. Remember – when the sun moves, so does the shade!
Paddling pools and ice blocks are a great fun way of keeping dogs cool on a hot day.
Avoid exercising dogs during the hottest times of the day; keep exercise light and ensure to provide water and shade breaks.
Keep small animals and pets with reduced mobility contained in a cool part of the house.
